Yvonne's IMS Southerns report

The first IMA Travelling event of the season took place at RCYC Sat 14th / 15th April. Saturday Race Officer Peter Crowley and his team Elaine Taylor, Sally O’ Leary, Andrea Devine ran three back to back races on a combination of windward leeward courses and Triangle courses, to take into account the single handed & spinnaker boats mixed in the fleet.

The seventeen boat fleet got off to a clean start, after a long testing sail out to Cuskinny in light winds. A steady 10- 14 knots of breeze did fill in for all three races and allowed the fleet to twin wire for the day. Adrian and Mike Allen from Ballyholme set the pace for the event with three bullets on day 1. No spectacular pitchpoles to report in the flat water conditions, but close racing was the order of the day – the first race saw 9 seconds separate Hobie Tigers Dermott Mc Hugh & Simon MacAree and local boat Jim Sheeran & Dave McGowan.
Race three Jim & Dave were on the pace again “1 second” behind race leaders, Adrian & Mike Allen on their Hurricane 5.9SX crossing the finish line

Day Two saw a change of Race Officer to Vitz Bulwalda and another two excellent races, again a combination of windward leeward and triangle course. Rob Doyle on the A-Class took line honours but 1st place on handicap went to Dermot Mangan and Aisling Clarke on the Spitfire, who sailed a flawless course. The final race of the event the local A-Class excelled in the slightly lighter conditions of 8 - 11 knots and Rob Doyle lead the fleet around the course followed by Yvonne Sheehan finishing 2nd over the line and on handicap.

Rob O’ Leary on his A- Class controlled the start line on both starts for Day 2 and was first boat to the top mark on both races, he managed to Port tack the entire fleet and only dipping one boat to get to the favoured side.

The next IMA event of the season is Galway Bay SC June 10th / 11th

Four A's turn up for racing, but lack of wind meant a cancellation of all racing, Brendan did try to get out but had to hold on to a buoy to fight the incoming tide just off the slip, he gave it fifteen minutes and called it a day. fingers crossed for next weekend!

2007 Sails

The first of the 2007 sails developed for the 2006 worlds has been released from OXO sails.

The current trend seems to revert back to the radial cuts. Landenberger is now testing with a radial construction which he will continue to make using the MAXX material and Steve Brewin has also incorperated the MAXX material into his sails. Glenn Ashby is again comfortable with continuing to sell, what essentially is his sail from the '04 worlds in 2007 using Pentex.

The husband and wife team of Glaser sails are gathering a strong following in North America after a move from Ullman. With Pete Melvin sailing with the latest design at the NA Nationals, which are on at the moment. Both Ashby and Glaser are using a Contender APEN cloth.

Round the Island Report

An eventful day had by all, involving a broken outhaul, 2 capsizes, a river pitchpole, a broken headboard (ya the one on the sail Jimmy!), a quadmaran and of course loads of pints to finish the day off.
4 Cats arrived on the start line for the 2006 Irish Examiner Round the Island race, Brendan & Rob Gill sailing A-cats and James & Chris helming their Tigers. Brendan and Rob decided to go out an hour early to get acquainted with the 25 Kts of breeze (and later on each other). After doing a couple of fast reaches up to the eastern end of spike, Rob and Brendan sailed back to the starting area to wait for the gun. Unfortunately the 2 A’s heaving too on opposite tacks proved to be the wrong decision when the two boats interlocked head on. With no control Rob’s boat bore off and I proceeded to sail backwards at 4/5 knots towards Camden. Finally within 30m of Camden I climbed out the bow to capsize the boat push Rob off. Phew!
After the gun, Chris managed the cleanest start on the busy line and we all fetched to the eastern tip of spike (missing James who broke his outhaul prior to the start). Brendan, then Rob, who started to pass Chris but unfortunatly broke his headboard, ending his race. By the time we reached spike the 2 cats had pulled a substantial lead over the mixed fleet. One tack brought Brendan across the top of spike with Chris a few minutes behind having to throw in an extra few tacks due to some unlucky shifts. Then an exciting and very slow bear away in the back channel where the wind was gusting in the late 20’s giving a very scary broad reach back to the finish line off Currabinny peer, which off course had 0 kts of breeze. Unfortunately Chris at this stage was upside down in the backchannel being caught out by a gust on the bear away.
The elapsed time for Brendan in the A-Class was 21 mins 24secs, with a 5 minute lead on corrected time.

Royal Cork Yacht Club News

A fantastic weekend was had for the members of the Royal Cork Yacht Club as the pinnacle of the season hit fever pitch with the “At Home” regatta kindly sponsored by Neville Jewellers. Over 10 classes took to the water from Optimists to Multihulls and from 1720’s to Cork Harbour One Designs. Excellent fun was had both on and off the water, celebrity team racing, crab fishing competitions, and much more. Superb prizes kindly sponsored by Neville Jewellers.

An excellent turnout of senior dinghies with the National 18s being won by Peter O’Donovan, with Colin Chapman in second. The multihull sailors were preparing for their up and coming national championship, Rob Doyle sailing an A-class took first with Brendan Faffiani in second with another A-Class and Chris Sheeran sailing a tiger in third.

British A Class Nationals 2007

Mumbles Yacht Club will be hosting the A Class Nationals from the 11th to 13th May 2007. At present the A's are having a three day event. Mumbles Yacht Club is located near Swansea in South Wales.

Sunday turned out to be just perfect, with the wind topping out at 20 knots from the west plus blue skies and a small chop with the square course set by the OD Keven Lane ( keeping the cats away from the kids) made for some great racing.

Conditions:

Tide: bottom of the ebb
Waves: small chop

Race one saw Rob Gill nail the start with a pin end port tack, by the top mark ( it was near cage) it was Rob D (A), Rob G (A), Brendan (A) Chris and Neil (Tiger) and Colm and Dave (Tiger). It was then off across the harbour to dognose on a close reach then gybe downwind to number 7, by this time Chris and Neil were very close to Rob D at the number 7 mark, but had a moment and ended up in the piss. Then it was a one tack beat to the bottom mark on the bank where Brendan hauled in Rob G and passed him and covered him all the way around the next lap. Final result was Rob D, Brendan, Rob G, Chris & Neil, Colm and Dave.

Race two saw a big wind shift to the right, with everybody hitting the committee boat end on starboard, It was Brendan leading the way to the top mark when to the joy of Neil (changed from the Tiger to the A for this race) and Rob D to see a 420 pull the mark down to them, thus Neil rounded first, then Rob D, Brendan ( who just could not believe what was happening) followed by Chris and Rob G (Tiger) and Colm and Dave (Tiger). this leg turned out to be a dead downwind leg and was full of light air holes and gusty conditions. Chris and Rob (Tiger) gybed away first out of the light stuff and pulled away, Colm and Dave then gybed followed by Neil. Rob D and Brendan held out in the light stuff in the hope of the new stronger wind ahead, when the wind came back it was Chris and Rob well to leeward and blasting along and making the dognose mark, with Brendan and Rob D heading down in very strong gust and Colm and Dave on the same line as Chris and Rob G and Neil behind them. Near the dognose Chris and Rob again had a moment and ended up in the piss, Rob D had passed Brendan to leeward and at the gybe mark gybed away heading for number 7, Colm and Dave rounded 3rd with Neil 4th, Chris and Rob were still over. This order stayed the same till the second round when Chris and Rob G blasted back into 3rd position in the downwind legs with the final result being Rob D 1st, Brendan 2nd, Chris and Rob G 3rd, Colm and Dave 4th and Neil 5th.

hard to get off the slip with the very low tide and the very gusty and
strong westerly wind. So it was time to do some tool boxing and prop up
